HISTORY AND HERITAGE
During the Qing dynasty, there was a county magistrate named Yang Xiaolian with a strong sense of filial piety for his ailing mother who had been sick for a number of years. He sought the help of several prominent doctors, but they were all unable to heal his mother.
Eventually, he came across Dr Ye, a doctor of great renown. Over many miles of travel, he brought Dr Ye back to his house to treat his mother. Dr Ye diagnosed that Yang Xiaolian’s mother was suffering from over-exhaustion and over time, it became an illness. However, it was not an illness that any normal medicine could heal. Dr Ye then gave him a remedy that had been passed down for generations, which successfully healed his ailing mother.
Thereafter, his mother lived to the old age of 84. Before she passed away, his mother told Yang Xiaolian that he needed to share the Pei Pa Koa remedy with the rest of the world. He decided to name this remedy Nin Jiom, meaning filial piety. Yang Xiaolian meticulously followed the formula for the remedy and used 10 precious herbal medicines, such as fritillaria bulb (chuan bei mu), platycodon root (jie geng), loquat leaf (pi pa ye), and honey to make Pei Pa Koa.
Anyone suffering from a chronic cough was encouraged to take Pei Pa Koa. Because it was such an effective remedy, the fame of Pei Pa Koa spread and many came to seek this medicine.
Thus, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa became familiar to all in northern China. When Yang Xiaolian passed away, even more people wanted access to this medicine. His descendants subsequently decided to open a shop in Beijing and added King To to the name, which means “capital”.
To this day, anyone receiving the medicine also receives the formula, in line with Yang Xiaolian’s mother’s wishes. Two hundred years later, the Japanese military invaded the Republic of China. The Yang family escaped south to Guangzhou first and then moved to Hong Kong. Because the Yang family was from northern China, they were unfamiliar with the customs of southern China and with Hong Kong laws. They decided to immigrate to Brazil, but were worried that Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa would be lost. And so, they entrusted Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa to Mr Xie and told him he must continue to share Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa with the world.
Mr Xie accepted this duty and in 1946, established Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa as a company. He continued to follow the original formula and openly shared the formula when giving out the medicine. After successfully running the business for many years, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa now enjoys worldwide recognition.

Located in Tibet and Datong County, Qinghai province at an elevation of over 3,800 meters,
Nin Jiom carefully cultivates its white pearl – the fritillaria bulb.
Why is it necessary for Nin Jiom to grow and cultivate its own fritillaria bulbs?
Natural, wild fritillaria bulbs are rich in medicinal value, but the quality and quantity is often unstable. Coupled with environmental issues such as deforestation and global warming, fritillaria bulbs have depleted.
Not only is Nin Jiom committed to using clean and unpolluted ingredients, Nin Jiom is also an advocate of “taking from the earth and giving back to the earth”. Thus, Nin Jiom established their own green base on the Qinghai Tibetan plateau 3,800 meters above sea level to cultivate fritillaria bulbs in a pollution-free environment. After years of dedicated care from workers who endured harsh working conditions such as extreme cold and low oxygen levels, combined the nourishing rains, sunshine and clean air, the fritillaria bulbs were finally revived on the Qinghai Tibetan plateau at an altitude of 3,800 meters.
